Fanny and Archie win ARIAs

Fanny Lumsden's current studio work – Fallow – has been named winner of Best Country Album at the 2020 ARIA Awards announced in Sydney last night.

Archie Roach was a double winner taking home Best Male Artist and Best Adult Contemporary Album with Tell Me Why.

He was also inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Organisers say the Awards took a lot of planning given COVID-19 restrictions, but deemed the event a success.

Though many of the winners were in different cities — and some in other countries — everyone got a chance to say their thanks.

The biggest winner of the night was Perth-based Tame Impala, who won five out of seven awards including Album of the Year.

Songwriter and rapper Sampa The Great also dominated, taking home three awards including Best Female Artist.

Jade, Mental Awareness Foundation Ambassador

Mental Awareness Foundation Ambassador country star Jade Holland has joined forces with the Foundation to produce The Resilience Tour 2020.

The tour features exclusive performances by Jade with people of all ages and persuasions throughout Queensland invited to bring “families, mates and brothers” to reconnect with local community while enjoying the music and “reigniting that spirit of resilience that Aussies are known for”.

It’s also been announced that Jade will continue as the Foundation’s Ambassador again in 2021.

Mental health is a cause close to Jade’s heart, having experienced first-hand the effects on family members.

“Jade is a perfect advocate for the Mental Awareness Foundation," a Foundation spokesman said. "We are proud to have her continue her great work."

Jade will next appear at Lefty’s Music Hall in Brisbane’s Petrie Terrace this Thursday evening (November 26) with special guests Laura Frank and Natalie Pearson.

The Mental Health Foundation is run by a union of individuals dedicated to making a difference in society.

Their mission is to support charities that are working directly with communities who are implementing strategies to raise awareness of depression and mental illness, while supporting the preservation of life.

“The Mental Awareness Foundation is all about delivering fun, exciting, informative, exhilarating experiences and events within communities which then enable us to support charities,” the spokesman said.

The organisation’s flagship event is the annual Walk for Awareness.

Now in its 10th year, this year, the Walk involved almost a thousand people with another 500 joining in virtually to walk eight kilometres, recognising the eight Australians who take their own life each day.

This year’s Walk raised more than $140,000 for the cause.

Allan passes 800 recordings

With the release of Amber Lawrence’s  new children’s album The Kid’s Gone Country 2, Allan Caswell went to 43 recordings of his songs for the year and more than 800 since he first had a song recorded in 1978.

The secret to his hit rate, Allan says, is the number of different artists who use him to co-write songs for their albums. He often finishes up with five or six songs on an album and often co-writes the whole project.

“I would much rather write with, rather than for, the artists,” he says, “they can take ownership of the songs and are way more believable when they sing them.”

Allan says he has always believed that a professional songwriter should be able to write anything and this is borne out by the variety of artists who have cut his songs, the likes of Cilla Black, James Blundell, Beccy Cole, Slim Dusty, Steve Earle, Barry Humphries, Anne Kirkpatrick, The Living End, Chad Morgan, Patti Page and The Wolfe Brothers.

He has co-written several children’s albums with “generation crossing” songs, as well as getting songs on dance, hip hop, blues, rock, gospel, television and film projects.

His biggest song, On The Inside (theme from the popular television series Prisoner) has been recorded at least 30 times worldwide.

Allan’s latest album – Tequila Amnesia – has already spawned a few country hits. The latest single – Christmas Takes Me Home with fellow country star Michael Fix – has just gone to radio.

“When I’m teaching my songwriting workshops, I preach the gospel of… you have to love it,” Allan says. “The more you enjoy writing, the more you do it and the more you do it the better you get at it… besides I get bored easily.”

Support Act's Ausmusic T-Shirt Day is here... today!

Some of the nation's most well known artists across all music genres have thrown their support behind the event including Casey Barnes, Catherine Britt, Travis Collins, Jessica Mauboy, Caitlyn Shadbolt, Keith Urban and Felicity Urquhart, all encouraging their fans to visit www.ausmusictshirtday.org.au to set up a team or make an individual donation.

Many other artists are posting their support on social media.

This year’s event boasts a brand new website, which has made setting up a team fundraising page, or making an individual donation, “super easy,” according to Support Act.

Almost 1,000 fundraisers have so far been organised with more than $130,000 already raised.

At the time of writing this report, Travis Collins was leading the fundraising charge with more than $17,000 raised through his channels.

True Blue added to Sounds of Australia registry

John Williamson’s classic True Blue has been inducted into the National Film & Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry.

The iconic song joins 10 other additions announced today. The registry recognises recordings that have had a defining impact on Australian culture.

"It really is recognition of those sounds that have a huge cultural impact that really stand the test of time and remain with people," curator Thorsten Kaeding said.

True Blue captures a moment in time in Australia's history, according to the Archive.
“It's a track that draws heavily on quintessential Aussie slang and was the soundtrack to the Australia Made campaign.

“The national cricket and rugby union teams even adopted True Blue as an unofficial theme song.”

"It pretty much immediately just hit a nerve I think with Australians and came to represent something more than a popular music song," Thorsten Kaeding said.

Other sounds added to the registry today include Arnhem Land Popular Classics featuring field recordings of elders playing the didgeridoo, known as the yidaki in Yolgnu, and singing near Katherine in the early 1960s.

The Masters Apprentices pop song Because I Love You has also been added, together with Starlight by Hamilton Hill (1907), an example of the country's emerging recording industry; Etude de concert in F minor and Etude de concert in A flat major by Eileen Joyce (1933), a piano prodigy who played for soldiers during World War II on the BBC; the It’s Time 1972 Gough Whitlam Labor Party election jingle; and Silvrchair's Tomorrow.

Rounding out the new additions are the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games Official Souvenir Recording; Nausicaa: Opera in Three Acts by Peggy Glanville-Hicks; and the recordings of comedy duo Tony Martin and Mick Molloy's 1990s radio program Martin/Molloy.
