The BobKatz

The Bobkatz are Garry Koehler [singer/songwriter, guitar, bass] and Robert Mackay [backing vocals, guitars, banjo, mandolin] and have been playing music together for about eight years.

The last three years have seen them move from playing cover songs to concentrating on their original music – music that is distinctly Australian and incorporating country, folk and blues.

Producer of their new album “Sweet Water” Mike Flanders likens Garry’s songwriting style to a cross between Mark Callaghan of “Gangajang” and Paul Kelly. Mike says “He just paints these fabulous, vivid pictures. That sort of “out on the patio” kind of vibe.”

To open up and enhance the country picture, Robert moved from guitars into banjo and mandolin. This instrumentation and Robert’s harmonies, on top of songs about real people and places, gives The Bobkatz their own sound.

Their new album contains two CMC tracks – “Welcome To Queensland” and “Little River Town” – and a remake of the timeless “Man In The Picture” which is known nationally through airplay received on “Australia All Over”.

“With the November 4 2006 release of their new album “Sweet Water”, the Bobkatz are bound to be the subject of increased national attention.

“Already a firm fixture on the airwaves of the nation through the ongoing support of popular ABC presenter Ian McNamara on his Sunday morning ‘Australia All Over’ show, their fame seems bound to spread further with the release of “Sweet Water”.

– Ritchie Yorke, Brisbane based author, journalist and broadcaster.
